Frequently Asked Questions

How does tax compliance differ from a tax advisory engagement?

Tax compliance and preparation is generally done on an annual basis and reports what has already happened. Tax advisory & planning is a proactive approach throughout the year to reduce your overall tax burden and put more money in your pocket.

Do you work with international business owners?

Absolutely. Many of our clients are non-U.S. owners with a U.S. business and customer base. We work with individuals and companies around that have some nexus to the United States.

Our services include tax filings, income tax treaty analysis, optimization of earnings repatriation, and withholding tax compliance.

What types of business tax returns do you prepare?

We prepare business tax returns for partnerships (Form 1065), corporations (Form 1120), S corporations (Form 1120-S), and foreign corporations (Form 1120-F).

We also assist with preparing any state income tax returns. Many businesses require state income tax returns based on the location of business activities, source of income, office locations, or residency of the owners.

We also prepare federal returns for homeowners’ associations (Form 1120-H) and Section 831(b) micro-captive insurance companies (Form 1120-PC).

How soon can we implement the tax planning strategies?

The time required to implement each proposed strategy will vary. Some components can be executed immediately, while others may take several weeks to months to fully implement.

Can you help with state & local (SALT) tax compliance?

SALT refers to the taxes imposed by U.S. states, counties, cities, and other local jurisdictions, which are separate from U.S. federal taxes.

Our SALT practice helps clients navigate multistate taxation—from determining nexus and income apportionment across jurisdictions to preparing and filing accurate state and local income tax returns.

What types of businesses do you work with?

We provide tax consulting and compliance services to a diverse range of clients, including e-commerce businesses, family offices, consulting firms, real estate companies, manufacturers, private equity, hedge funds, and insurance companies.

If our company has operations in foreign countries, how does it impact our business taxes?

When a U.S. business has operations in other countries, the annual tax filings generally require additional international disclosures.

Those disclosures may include the Form 5471 for a controlled foreign corporation (CFC), Form 8858 for a foreign branch, Form 8865 for a foreign partnership investment, Form 8621 for PFICs, or the Form 8938 & FBARs for disclosing foreign financial accounts.

We regularly assist our international clients with these additional forms and disclosures.

Planning for All Businesses

  • Maximize Depreciation Deductions

We help companies leverage all available forms of depreciation expense to maximize deductions and increase cash flow, including bonus depreciation, Section 179 expensing, cost segregation studies, and the de minimis safe harbor election.

  • Reasonable Compensation Planning

S corporation and C corporation owner-employees should carefully balance salary and distributions to effectively manage payroll costs and income taxes, ensuring maximum tax savings.

  • Timing Strategies

We help businesses develop timing strategies to shift when revenue and deductions are recognized, aiming to reduce taxable income in high-tax years and smooth the tax liability over time.

  • Accounting Method Elections

Every business should analyze their accounting methods to best maximize their tax savings, including cash vs. accrual method elections, and appropriate inventory accounting under LIFO or FIFIO methods.

  • Pass-Through Entity State Tax Elections

The Pass-Through Entity (PTE) tax election is a state-level workaround to the federal $40,000 SALT (State and Local Tax) deduction cap which was initially introduced under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The PTE election lets a pass-through business (partnership or S corporation) pay state income taxes at the entity level which becomes a deductible expense.

Sophisticated Strategies

  • Optimal Entity Selection

Selecting the right business entity—whether an LLC, corporation, or LP, and its tax classification as either a partnership, C corporation, or S corporation—has a significant impact on your company’s tax profile, and we help guide you through that decision.

  • Federal & State Tax Credits

Businesses often leave dozens of valuable federal and state tax credits unclaimed each year simply because they’re unaware they exist, and we help uncover these overlooked incentives on your behalf.

  • Cost Segregation Studies

A cost segregation study is an engineering-based analysis that reclassifies components of a commercial or investment property from the standard 27.5- or 39-year depreciation schedule into shorter 5-, 7-, or 15-year categories, allowing a business to accelerate depreciation deductions, reduce current taxable income, and improve cash flow.

  • Section 831(b) Captive Insurance

These “micro captives” allow business owners to form their own insurance company to insure the risks of their business, and allows the insurance entity to exempt up to $2 million per year in insurance premium income, free of taxes.

  • Family Employment Strategies

We help businesses find opportunities to hire family members (including minors) shifting income to lower brackets where legitime, and help with the analysis and proper documenation to support the relationship.
