The IRS newsroom recently published an update notifying tax return preparers that they are getting a reduced annual PTIN fee starting for the 2026 tax season.
The PTIN renewal fee for 2025 was $19.75. This fee comprises an $11 fee payable to the IRS and an $8.75 fee payable to a third-party processing company.
Starting with the 2026 renewals, the IRS is reducing its fee from $11 to $10, culminating in a total cost of $18.75.
Tax return preparers get a $1 fee break! It’s a big win for those with a PTIN looking to file client tax returns in 2026.
